The 7th edition of the Porto International Hip Meeting (PIHM2022) took place on 1st and 2nd July. The President of the Order of Physiotherapists, António Lopes, took part in this two-day event to update and discuss hip pathology, namely in a session that highlighted the importance of physiotherapists in the rehabilitation process of patients with hip dysfunction and the team relationship with orthopaedic surgeons: "being two distinct and complementary professions means that we are naturally partners and can develop our activity in a way that focuses on what is essential, which is providing better care for our users," he said.
With the support of the international panel of orthopaedic surgeons from the general PIHM2022 Organising Committee, Jorge Cruz de Melo, Fernando Leal, Paulo Rego, Manuel Ribas, Ana Castel, Pedro Dantas, Lafayette Lage and Carlomango Cardenas, the session dedicated to Physiotherapy, which took place for the second time as part of this event, was attended by four organising members - Álvaro Magalhães, Baltazar Moutela, Nelson Azevedo and Paulo Oliveira - and the Scientific Committee, with five members - Duarte Pereira, Fernando Ribeiro, Nuno Cordeiro, (1st Vice-President of the Board of the Order of Physiotherapists), Rui Gonçalves and Rui Torres.
In this session, which had five round tables on the themes of 'Hip Surgery', 'Sport', 'Surgery as a last resort', 'The future of Physiotherapy and Orthopaedics', as well as the presentation of real cases: 'My hip story', the importance of the Physiotherapist in all phases of the intervention process for patients with hip dysfunctions was presented and discussed, namely in the assessment and definition of treatment and intervention objectives; in supporting the patient in the decision-making process of procedures and treatment plan and in preoperative and postoperative follow-up in inpatient or outpatient settings.
In his speech, the President of the Order of Physiotherapists, António Lopes, also focussed on the challenges facing the profession and physiotherapists in meeting the needs of all the patients who use their services.
